Abandoned Warehouse: A Faint Trail
*In an old shipping district stand many decrepit warehouses. Along the streets are several posters for a "Supernatural Enthusiasts meeting" that specify around this time, though no date can be found. All the posters direct to the same warehouse, inside which faint sounds of machinework can be heard*
While not wholly interested in the supernatural, Caignes had nowhere else to go. He was a lone wolf in this wide open plain. As he approached the warehouse, his ears twitching at the unfamiliar sounds coming from inside.
(*twitched)
*Lowe holds one of the flyers in his hands, seemingly following the directions to this specific warehouse.* Can't say I'm all that interested in the supernatural, not most of the time anyway...but in a place like this, "supernatural" usually means "dangerous". I should be checking this out.
*Alice was lucky enough, or unlucky depending on how this might go, to have noticed said posters and decide to attend this meeting. Standing outside of the warehouse in question, one of the aforementioned posters in her hand, she'd look up at the building.* An unsettling building in an unsettling part of town. How... unsettling? Well I suppose I might as well take a look. *With that said, she finds her way inside. The noise of active machines only served to put her even more on the defensive.*
*Although PK can't read, he does recognize the warehouse from before, striding into it as loudly as humanly possible and shouting out loud It is I! Pancake Knight! Did somebody need help!
*As the door is wide open, Alice and the others are easily able to find their way inside. There, a lavender-haired young man can be seen at a workbench with a small welding tool, seemingly putting finishing touches on a project* *He winces as PK shouts inside and turns around* Oh, its you again. Nice to see you made it out PK. *Gamma chuckles and looks at the others* And some new visitors. I don't rem...... I forgot to take down those posters, didn't I?
*Lowe walks inside the warehouse, crumpling the poster into a ball and bouncing it off a nearby bit of busted up machinery.* Yeah well, you're lucky people like us found them and not one of the more unsavory people that live in this "world". We've met before, right? I'm Lowe, the kid with the trains, and if memory serves you're Gamma, yeah? So, what is all this, and what's the supernatural club thing about?
*PK then turns to Gamma, smiling and patting him on the back, still shouting at such close quarters Ah! Gamma! How do you do? Are you working on something! It looks quite interesting! I would like to know what it is! I do like to work with electrical stuff!
You always attract such... interesting company Gamma. Just like this train boy here, I too am interested in what this is all about. Judging by how you reacted to the posters, I assume this isn't something new? *Alice would be looking around the building, glancing every so often back at Lowe and Caignes as she has yet to meet either and is thus interested in them.*
The man snickers at Gamma's mishap, before inspecting the room with his eyes. He's particularly interested in the welding tool, unfamiliar with it's usage and workings. "Man, the world really evolved past me, didn't it? What IS all this stuff anyways? Is that light sparky thing some kind of blinding weapon? Seems pretty effective to me." Caignes catches Alice looking at him, and gives her a wide smirk, showing off his fangs, before returning his attention elsewhere.
*Gamma nods at Lowe and sighs* Gamma's my name indeed, saw you once at the Gym. *Gamma yawns and scratches the back of his head, glancing between Lowe and Alice* As for the supernatural thing.... It was an event I held a few days ago, kind of a last minute thing so I didn't bother putting up a date. I ap- *Gamma is interrupted by PK and covers his ears* Think you could be a bit quieter? You'll wake u..... Oh yeah, no one lives here. Except me kinda.... *Gamma thinks for a moment, before sighing and taking a fairly small device with several black and white bars on it. The bars seem to be fluxuating slightly, but are mostly consistent* Its only fair I tell you, since you were there last time.... But it might go over your head a bit.... *Gamma clears his throat and turns to the group* As I'm sure you're aware, there are many kinds of magic in this Nexus of ours, many of them are similar, but none of them are quite identical. *Gamma chuckles and holds up the small tool* Its simply used to fix pieces of metal together. I suppose you could fight with it, but its not quite as useful for that. Most of this stuff is fairly standard computer equipment, though I was able to get a little magic involved as well.
*Malloryn passes by, listening her music and looking around. As such, she sees a group of people and decides to do the most logical (lol no) thing to do and investigate. She pauses her music and goes inside, seeing everyone along with Gamma working by himself.* "I'm pretty sure I've met him before like all of you are saying. He was the one managing the game cave, I read his bor-I mean, wonderful "book." last time I remember I was there." *After that she then turned to look at everyone, who she met before! Excluding Lowe and Caignes of course. He was the one managing the game cave, I read his bor-I mean, wonderful "book." last time I remember I was there." she mumbled to herself. *After that she then turned to look at everyone, who she met before! Excluding Lowe and Caignes of course...since this was the result, she decided to stick around. Though her first glance was at Alice, as they were both looking as if they both don't really fit in with the scenery.*
Ooc: Goddamn, that's a messup.
Ooc: Ignore the first two paragraps Gamma, k? You can do something that simple considering that this is the first time I did this.
OOC: Don't worry about it m8, it'll be fiiiiine.
Oh! That's right! I should be more quiet! *PK then tones down his voice as he listens to Gamma for a bit before speaking out, somewhat confused Hm? I was there for what! I don't remember doing anything of particular importance! At any rate that device sure is interesting! What does it do?
What it does is one thing but I'm much more curious about what you intend to do with it! Certainly you aren't just working on whatever you're working on for fun, right? *She did manage to catch Caignes looking in her direction but she'd rather not comment on it. Whether it's because the exposed fang had rattled her or because she'd rather not associate with a talking wolf, she'll never say!* Mal! I was beginning to wonder if you had disappeared or something as I hadn't heard from you in a while! *She'd step over to her tourney partner. Although they weren't particularly the best of friends she still felt she was somewhat familiar with her as Alice goes on to place a hand on her shoulder and smile.*
T-train boy? I got a name, y'know. I'm Lowe, and for the record I think I have more than just a weird power to my name. *Lowe sighs in resignation, places a hand on his hip and nods at Gamma's explanation.* So...you made a power tool that runs on magic? I may not have been here before, but I'd still like to know what the deal is, I came all the way out here after all.
Caignes catches Alice's expression as she notices his smirk, feeling a bit heartbroken. "Computer..? Oh, like pewter, I gotcha! Well, I guess that makes sense then. But magic, huh? Never really been skilled in the stuff. I guess I've only really been able to use it in a group..."
"Oh, well, you know, I was just ummm...we haven't got to talk for a bit, you know? It feels rather nostalgic having you here..." she reciprocated back to Alice, kind of uncomfortable with her hand on the shoulder but tolerates it anyway. *As if being the best of friends wasn't enough, the fact that they're doing this at an abandoned warehouse made her feel more uneasy. Even if this was the case, she brushed it off and decided to get her fix her composure.* "Ok, where was I? Ah, you thinking I just faded away. Well, you see, since the tourney is taking a bit long after it's first round, I forgot both you and it existed. Not that I don't like you, just that I got caught up with life as usual." she said as she turned back to look at Caignes. "You don't mind telling me who you're new pet is, right? I'm sorry, it slipped, I meant to say friend, but the ears made me think of a fox for some reason..." *As always, her unusually deep voice of hers made her sound so sincere. Making her sound a bit displeasing to her first saying to Alice and a bit cruel to Caignes instead of her intended teasing.*
Ooc: I like to point out a one thing me 5 minutes ago did wrong. 2nd para: As if not etc...
*Gamma sighs and shakes his head* Just.... Don't worry about it PK. I'm sure you did fine. After all, Hazama was there and everything worked out. *Gamma glances back over to Alice and shrugs* You make it sound like I'm some sort of villain. Really, what harm could I possibly do with a magic detector anyways? *Gamma looks back over to Lowe and blinks for a moment, before taking the device back out* Oh, yeah... I hadn't gotten to that part yet. Its not really a power tool. That was a completely ordinary tool I was using earlier to put the finishing touches on this. *Gamma clears his throat and gestures to the bars, all of which are around equal* So, this Nexus of ours has many types of Magic, each of which, while they may function similarly, has its own... "Wavelength" of sorts. I was recently able to calibrate this to differentiate these wavelengths, effectively allowing me to detect the concentrations of magic in an area. *shrug* Of course, anywhere from a specific world is likely to have a higher concentration of that world's magic. For example, lets say we found an area from your world. I'd most likely find a higher concentration of train magic there.
Well, I think you'd be lacking in "Wavelengths" to detect in my world. Magic is pretty much fiction where I'm from. *He glances at the cloth wrapped around his arm, before looking down at the ground.* Guess I just got lucky.
Caignes' brow furrows as the young lady calls him a pet, his fangs showing through his lips a smidge. "Do you have a death wish, little missy? I'm a Therian, not some tamed dog. Keep your unnecessary comments to yourself." He crosses his arms, muttering to himself and ignoring Gamma's speech about magic. "Guess people got a whole lot ruder in the time I was gone too..."
Well okay then! *PK then plops himself into the floor, the explanation making about 0 sense in his very simple mind, its clear that this is way too much for our beloved knight of breakfast pastries
*Alice hadn't particularly been forcing her smile for Malloryn but once she mentioned forgetting her very existence and then going on to assume that Caignes was her pet, she found it very hard to keep this smile of her's forced.* I'm... "sorry" to hear that life had been so stingy. And no, that beast isn't my pet. *She retracts her hand and quickly turns her attention back to Gamma, her smile immediately fading as she'd then address what he had said in regards to her question.* Well anyone and everyone is capable of evil, would you not agree? But forgive me for I didn't mean to suggest that what you're doing here is of that nature. I'm just curious of what you intend to do with this detector is all~! *Her tone, near the end, would further suggest her innocent intentions.*
*Gamma chuckles and puts away the device* Obviously your world had some Lowe, otherwise it wouldn't be flowing through this place right now. Really, every world's energy flows through the Nexus, that's what the place is all about. Well, every connected world does anyways. And like any river, it can be followed to their source. *Gamma gestures to a map spread out on his workbench, there are some larger lines drawn on it, but very little else* Though, perhaps river is the wrong explanation. Think of it like the circulatory system. With magic flowing through the body like blood through veins. As with either case, there are places where the flow is stronger.... Leylines of sorts. That is to say, flows of spiritual energy. *Finally, Gamma looks over to Alice and grins* Well, I'm pretty much just doing research honestly. Not everyone can handle every kind of magic as you might be aware. We all draw on some of the energy that's familiar to us, even unknowingly. Even if it turns out to be useless, Knowledge for knowledge's sake and all that.
So...are you trying to use this detector thing to trace these "wavelengths" back to their sources? Are you trying to chart this Nexus place, basically?
That's one way to put it. Locating the primary sources of magic flow and marking them for future study.
*Jumps out of a nearby cardboard box* Did someone say magic?
*Seeing as how she messed everything up by being her realist self, she decided to act her "normal" way...again. But first, she decided to try and make amends with Caignes...albeit, with a thin line of patience as she sighs and turns to Caignes' direction, walking closer to keep a bit more distance away from Alice to try and have her not see her looking as if she were a bully.* "Ok, look, "Therian". I was just trying to be myself, like everyone else told me, but apparently I can't because my heritage makes it so that I have to sound like this. It's too tiring when you always sound so straightforward because I always have insults to throw. Now I have to act like a princess so that people won't assume I'm like this. We have it clear?" she asked Caignes, as always, in her trademark pessimistic realist tone. She breathed out and then formed a smirk. "Now, be a dear and tell Alice the same thing I told you...don't tell me I was acting like a bully though, the last thing I want is for her to get even more angry. I felt a bit guilty making someone like her negatively persumptious about me." she requested of him, this time, sounding a bit more happy formal, putting more of her french accent in as well. *If you didn't know already by her change of faces, she's...bipolar. Something she slips a bit whenever she's angry. Though one thing she tries very hard to keep a secret is, stop reading this that's all you need to know. Other then that, now you know that she switches acts in order to please people. I wish there was an actual term for it.*
*Folding a poster and pocketing it as he enters the warehouse, Kalib looks around at the group silently. He'd listen as the others speak, opting to just keep quiet for the time being.*
Caignes takes a deep breath, calming himself down. before looking back at Mal with a serious expression. "Look, I've got no issue with some light jabbing or straight up insults, but what you messed with was a... touchy subject. Just don't mention it again, and we're all good." Caignes smirks a little, although it's more playful than mean-spirited.. "Ya damn blue blood wannabe." He ignores the rest of her request, looking a little at Alice before shifting his gaze to Gamma's device.
Well, that's pretty admirable. Then again, there's no telling just how large this place is, you could be searching forever, following a bread trail that will never lead anywhere. I can tell you as someone who only visits the most... *Lowe would think about how he spends most of his time in destroyed parts of cities* ...prolific scenes this Nexus has to offer, there's no end in sight. What spurred you to do this, exactly?
"Knowledge for knowledge's sake." I'll be sure to remember that! Anyway, you have me interested now. Tracing things to their source, leylines or whatever, so now I feel the need to ask if it's possible to assist you in any way. *She'd close her eyes and raise a finger into the air as she recited the words Gamma spoke, opening them once she had done so. She'd lower her hand and step forward as she had anticipated Gamma's response. Even after considering Lowe's words, the idea of finding the source of such energies would keep her from getting dissuaded.*
*Jumps out of cardboard box onto Gamma*
*Gamma sighs and shakes his head* Honestly, that's part of why I'm doing this Lowe. There's so much.... Terrible stuff here. It always seems that magic is the source of our problems. So I suppose I want to learn more about it, perhaps take preventative measures later on. *Gamma smiles at Alice and scratches the back of his head* Well, thanks for the offer, but I don't really think I'll need help for it. *Gamma finally notices Caignes's gaze and looks over to them* Excuse me? Can I help you with anything? You seem rather.... Out of yo- *Gamma is cut off by the pikachu jumping onto him* Hey, watch it. Be more careful, some of this stuff is fragile.
*She then puts her hands together and tilts her head slightly to the left, insuing that requirements are met.* "I'll do my best to be more considerate, take care." she said in a slightly exaggerated cheery tone as well as a snicker, indicating she has no idea what blue-blood means. *As her phone vibrated in her pocket, the name up top read AMFI. As such, she answered it and then went on her way without notice.* Ooc: This means I'm leaving. Curfew. Baaaaiiiii.
Sorry... *Jumps off* Why are we here again?
*Lowe smirks, and holds out the hand attached to his banded arm for Gamma to shake.* Well, then you have my support in that case. Anything to keep people safe. If you ever need someone who can throw bullet trains around at will, lemme know.
Caignes gives Gamma a little smile, before shrugging. "Just kinda curious where this is in relation to Arcadia. It's probably been a while but I didn't expect thr world to be... this different."
*Kalib would pipe up at the mention of "preventative measures".* Pardon the intrusion, Gamma. I found one of your posters and decided it'd be worthwhile to come check things out. *He brings his right hand to his chin for a moment and then speaks.* So your plan is to study and prepare countermeasures against different supernatural sources? I can't say I'm not on board with that idea. *He'd grin before letting out a laugh.* I'd offer my assistance but I figure you'd probably just say something like, "No. An idiot like you would only get in the way." *He'd stick is right arm at Gamma while holding out his index finger.* Right?
(*Arcania. They're such similar names that I often flip them around.)
*After having been denied the opportunity to help, she'd merely frown. It's not like she expected to be of much help anyway but she had seemed eager to hunt for magic for one reason or another.* That's disappointing I suppose. I'll just have stand with train boy on this one then and offer words of encouragement! *Upon noticing Mal's departure, Alice looks over her shoulder to see her off. She offered no goodbye or a wave and instead just kinda looked at her go, at which point she'd see Kalib and smile at the familiar face instead.*
*Gamma shrugs before accepting Lowes handshake* I seriously doubt there'd be any need, but I guess I could call on you people whenever I go out to find a source. In case something ridiculous happens. Never know with the Nexus *Gamma looks over to Caignes and blinks for a moment, before sighing and taking of his glasses to clean* I take it you're new here? This is what we like to call the Nexus, a sort of amalglamation of worlds, including your Arcania apparently. I could... *sigh* Man this explanation always takes forever. Basically anything can happen and very little of this place is likely to resemble home in any way shape or form. *Finally Gamma makes a show of shrugging, both arms out by his sides* I don't really care what you people do Kalib, if you want to tag along I don't see any issue. I just doubt it'll be as exciting as you may be expecting.
He thinks for a second, before laughing a little. "I have to say, that's probably the daftest things I've ever heard. But... frankly, I'm compelled to believe it. You don't seem like the type to lie." Caignes takes one last look around the room, before heading towards the door he came in from. "Well, I think I'll go do a little exploring. Maybe I'll find something I can do with my time here." Glancing one last time at Alice, and giving a hello and goodbye nod to Kalib, Caignes walks off.
*Lowe shrugs, and scratches his head.* Well, you never know, right? I'll be on call or whatever, but I'm sure you can handle it.
*Catching sight of Alice he'd smile and give a small wave before turning his attention back to Gamma.* So what exactly do you plan to do when you find a source. I can only imagine something that powerful would be pretty terrifying in the wrong hands, so I figured it pertinent to ask. *Kalib would nod back at the new face as they left.*
*Gamma chuckles to himself and shakes his head as Caignes goes* Yeah, honestly its one of the dumbest things I've ever heard too. But its part of my life now, so I deal with it. *Gamma looks back and Klib and ponders a moment* In truth, I don't know. As I haven't found one I can't really say how useful or useless it might be. If nothing else I can say I'd like to study it. Or it may be safer just to be rid of.
Hey hey whoa. You sure you can just...be rid of something like that? There's no way you can just expect us to let you cross that bridge when you get to it, can you?
*Alice watched the newcomer leave. Although it was hard to place exactly what was going on his mind, the awkward glances they exchanged only served to deepen the negativity that could form. After he left she turns her attention back to Gamma in anticipation for how he might've responded to Kalib. Once he mentions the possibility of having to destroy a source of magic, she chimes in.* How would you go about destroying something like that? Also, would it not be more dangerous to get rid of it? I imagine a world lacking the source of its magic being pretty... Well, I don't even know. I'm not really an expert here.
*Kalib starts to speak as Alice finishes.* I can only imagine that some worlds can only exist due to the magic they have. I don't have any proof, but would you really be okay with getting rid of a whole world just because it might inconvenience us in the future? *He crosses his arms and sighs.* Even if something does hold potential to become a threat, that doesn't mean we should write them off! Humans are imperfect creatures, we hold the potential for both good and evil...and I'd like to believe that all things do.
*Gamma sighs and leans back in his chair, arms behind his head* It feels like you people are overreacting a bit. There are a few differences. First, if anything, the world would be perfectly fine, probably better off in fact. I don't have to blow the thing up, just find out where it links to the Nexus and severs it there. No harm done to anyone. *Gamma makes a show of shrugging, and reaches into his pocket* Though of course, I'll have to look into it a bit when I get there. Not everything can be theorycrafted.
Doesn't change the fact that it's a lot of potential power in one man's hands. You can't expect us to just roll with that without question.
It is kind of concerning, I can't deny that tra-... Er, Lowe. Sorry, I just like train boy better. Anyway, yeah it's a little concerning but it sounds like Gamma is doing it for a good cause. It can't be that bad, can it? *She'd cross her arms and look between the two of them. It's kind of hard to believe it if Alice really is just this naive or this trusting of others, especially Gamma.*
You may have a point, but what right do you have to choose what's best for a world you aren't native to? Even if it would benefit the world, that should be left to them to deal with. Why should we meddle in the affairs of other worlds? *Kalib would shake his head.*
*Gamma sighs and looks over to Lowe* I was under the impression I was being questioned right now. *shrug* Like I've said before, I don't care if you want to tag along. *Gamma nods and flashes Alice a quick smile* Finally, someone gets it. *Gamma glances back at Klib and shrugs* Answer me this, is it another world's affair if our "Overlord" gets bored and decides to throw a meteor at a building? Is it another world's affair if yet another god of who cares thinks "I like this Nexus place, I think I'll keep it. Just gotta clean up the ones living there first"? Both of these scenarios can and have happened. Would you rather we just play damage control, and let hundreds, maybe thousands of people get hurt because no one wanted to do anything?
It's not-...Whatever. Train Boy seems to have stuck. What was it that weird guy called me before? "The Demon of the Subway Tunnels?" Something like that. That's a title I can get behind. *He turns to Gamma, looking apologetic* Look man, I don't WANT to distrust you, but it's hard to trust a guy I hardly know with power like that.
*Alice smiles brightly at how Lowe took to her calling him train boy so it's safe to assume that she'll be doing it a lot more in the future. She'd do as she usually does and wait patiently for both sides to be addressed before adding in her own thoughts although she clearly doesn't seem to think much can be said at this point that hasn't already been said.* This certainly is a very touchy subject... I'd still like to believe that what Gamma intends to do is right, but what would happen if he became like the very beings he just described?
*Kalib balls his hands into fists as he glares at Gamma.* At that point it is our problem, because it's on our doorstep. But of course I'd rather save the thousands by being proactive, but whatever, neither of us have proof of what may happen. *He'd relax himself and look away.*
*Gamma breathes a sigh of frustration* I've said it before, I've said it again. If anyone wants to tag along because they're worried I really don't care. Though it might get a bit crowded if that ends up being half the Nexus. *Gamma casts Alice a sideways glance and shrugs* No offense, but what exactly are you trying to imply there? That I'm no better than that brat who fancies himself a ruler? At the very least, I'm more responsible than half the people who end up here. The kind of people that I and others have to clean up after. *Gamma chuckles and turns back to his bench* You're right, I don't know exactly what would happen. But you know what Kalib? At least I'm trying to do something to improve the situation, rather than sit around babbling about how wonderful everything is and that everyone should get along swell. Instead, I'm looking for solutions, and if one doesn't work out, I'll just have to find another.
Why only now then? Plans fall through with Homura? *He'd stifle a laugh.* And sure I am pretty complacent, but I know how powerless I am with all this stuff! So I leave it to the ones who have dealt with this stuff before and then I do what I can to help them! *Kalib shrugs.* Whatever, I'll watch over this. You've made valid points and I agree we should learn more about what we're up against.
*Alice opens her mouth and raises her finger, as if ready to counter the claim that Gamma had made, but then stops herself short. She clearly has something to say but has hesitated for one reason or another. At this point she'd wait for Kalib to finish before even thinking to speak again but instead she'd just frown and step away as if heading for the door.* Uhm... I think I'll call it here for now. I guess if you do need our help you'll ask for it. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. *And thus Alice would step out of the warehouse and leave the others to their conversation while she returned to... wherever she ends up.*
*Gamma clenches his fists at the mention of Homura and sighs, turning to the group with an obviously forced smile* I think Alice has the right idea there. Get out. Now. Before one of you says something you really might regret. If you want to follow me, again, I don't care. But if all you're doing is remaining behind to annoy me, then its really not a good idea for anyone.
Oh, scary. I touched a nerve. *With that Kalib would turn on his heel and head out.*
*Lowe clicks his tongue, and turns to leave. He stops at the door, turning to glance back at the man.* You're a good guy Gamma, I want to believe that; but I can't afford to take risks. Sorry. *With that, he leaves out a side door, slamming it shut as he goes.*
*Gamma sighs and takes a deep breath, before looking back at his workbench and taking out a small, hand-drawn blueprint* That was probably a bit harsh...... *sigh* No matter. I'll save this place, that much is certain. Or at the very least, I'll make sure it knows I was here.
