Thoughts on the Pokemon Sun & Moon anime?
Considering the backlash it got when it was revealed, I'm curious to see what people's thought are now. I personally just can't get into it. All the slice of life stuff and lack of battles is just really uninteresting and all the goofy facial expressions don't do anything for me. The fact that this is after XY&Z just makes it so much worse. And I've really tried to get into it, but I just can't.
I'm surprisingly refreshed by the change in formula after I was pretty done with it before after Hoenn. It's nice. Also Lana is great and makes everything great
The artstyle was neat to me when it was revealed. But seeing Brock and Misty in that artstyle I've changed my mind. They went TOO simple with it. Formula seems okay by and large. Since obviously they couldn't recycle the same old plot without Gyms. I'm still pissed that the anime didn't even bother to try adapting the A+ Aether/Skull plot.
Well it looks like they're finally getting to the Aether Foundation stuff since Lusamine and Cosmog were just introduced.
As bad as the anime has been since 98. And as bad as the S/M games too. I'm just happy they obviously cut the budget.

I haven't seen much of the S/M anime, but I enjoy the style change. It's more bouncy and lively.

But it has an excuse, it's for babies. Hell, it was on TV when I was a kid, and STILL is. That's fine, but I don't understand why it never seems to end. I can think of so many better uses of an animator's time in bringing something to life than Pokemon. Sun and Moon's obviously downgrade budget is a welcome change for that anime. They're starting to realize they were spending too much money on it. If it has to go on, might as well cut the budget to maybe use elsewhere.
It is literally the worst written anime (even worse than JoJo) I have ever seen. Did you just fucking say that JoJo has bad writing? How dare you. May Araki take your youth, so he can live forever.

Yep, I sure did. Anyone who has watched or read "Phantom Blood" and can still defend that trash has my pity. And yes, before you go all fanboy, I know it gets 'better', but it's still horrendous. And besides, I can't name anything I truly love that has a 'fucking horrible first quarter'. JoJo is overrated trash. If you have anything more to say to me past that, take it to PM and don't clutter up this topic.
I feel truly blessed. The day has come where I finally find someone else who dislikes the trainwreck that is JoJo. You have my admiration. Anyways, on the topic of the Pokemon anime. It's alright, I suppose. I enjoy the animation change but in the end it's just Pokemon. Something we've seen before in all the other Pokemon anime. They can doll it up as much as they like and maybe even do it slightly better- but until they do something about the repetition it will remain bland and forgettable. It's just the same old stuff we've been seeing for years. I mean come on, Team Rocket is still in like every episode, right? They gotta be. It's always just those three show up, try to get pikachu, fail, then TEAM ROCKET'S BLASTING OFF AGAAAAAIN! *ding*

It's always just those three show up, try to get pikachu, fail, then TEAM ROCKET'S BLASTING OFF AGAAAAAIN! *ding* I seem to recall a manga adaption of it that would routinely change protagonists, and yet had every story converage into a bigger story arc, with all of them. I didn't think it was that great, but if you had to do a Pokemon adaptation (of a game series that essentially reuses the same plot every time anyway), that's how you would go about it, ideally. The fact we still have the R/B/G inspired protagonist from 20+ years ago, and STILL two baffoons from Team Rocket, which even in the cartoon, disbanded eons ago kind of proves how uninspired it is. It's called the status quo; and in Pokemon it never changes. If it does, it's superficial. Yeah, he changes traveling partners, but each one is just a replacement for the next. There's always another girl and boy; there's no real impact on anything by changing them out. Pure status quo. That's how you'd describe the Pokemon anime.

I've only watched the first 10 or so episodes in Japanese and only the first in English (Because Ash's VA is extremely grating) and I can't say it's anything outstanding, but it has it's up sides. While it did change the formula a bit (For the better imo), it didn't do anything else spectacular. However, it has a lot more spice of life in it compared to other seasons, which is something I rather enjoy personally, so I can't say I don't find the show enjoyable at the very least. And on a slightly different topic, I find the change in art style to be VERY good for the show. Sticking with the same art style since the RSE anime has really been showing, and as charming as it was, I really prefer the bubbly, colorful, and expressive art style that this season has rather than continuing to use the same one. I have no issue with the old art style itself, but its simply been too long since any change in it has occurred. TL;DR, I like it for what it is, and I like the shift in art style.

Man the JoJo fanboys are rampant here. I'd love to discuss why. But I'm dead serious. I can't give it anything but a big fat 0 out of 10. But send a PM. Not post here.

Except I don't care about JoJo at all. Never seen it and don't really care to, but if you really if you really think Pokemon is the worst anime ever...well you must've only been stuff like watching Miyazaki movies or Cowboy Bebop or whatever.
Oh. Pokemon is the worst from a writing standpoint because it's made for babies. Simple as that. And it has to go on literally forever. (Or until the games stop) My replies with Kitagawa elaborate more on that.

Not sure how target audience has anything to do with anything. By that logic, almost everything Disney has ever put out is absolutely abysmal. If anything, for a kid's show, the anime's managed to stay consistently decent for the majority of its run with some ups(mainly XY&Z) and downs(mainly BW)
That's actually kind of my point. Pokemon is a show for kids of the mentality that there's no reason to try because of that, unlike something like Disney. That and they're forced to stretch a show that barely had a plot line or characters to begin with indefinitely. They might have had a vision before, but it's long gone. And honestly, it was always a very very poor adaptation of the original games. It's painfully clear that almost no one heading it up (in Japan, not the dubbing) has almost no idea what goes on in the games. It's for very small children, forced to go on endlessly, and cannot break the set status quo = bad combination. I see it more as a product than actual entertainment now. And yes, I will agree it is not the worst anime around, but the fact I can think of so many more deserving animes that need more episodes, the fact this nothing franchise will never end is insulting.
Well the original games barely had a plot to begin with, so of course it's gonna do its own thing. And no vision? If anything, it's the exact opposite. I'll agree that it's basically a 20+ minute commercial, but that's literally been the case since day 1. Well that and the status quo is BS.
In the day. There is no vision now apart from it must never end. If it has a vision, tell me what it is. I didn't mean plot of the games. Tone, mechanics, structure, character motivations, etc (there are actually good characters in the games), and just why people love the games as much as they do. The anime misses all those points nearly entirely. It's a generally bad anime and a very poor adaptation, whether it had a vision or not. It did not work for Pokemon and was quickly abandoned for endless filler. No idea why you think status quo is BS. Pokemon the anime literally defines "status quo".

They made an entire 4-part special to build up the plot for the XY anime. And there's the current SM anime. Tone-How doesn't it exactly? Mechanics-Outside of it not having turn based battles for what should be obvious reasons, this is wrong. Structure-? Characters-Earlier characters barely had any real motivations is any at all and the latter characters are pretty close to their game counterparts. And once again, this is objectively wrong.
You're using that one special that specifically tried to be like the games, ie, admitting the current anime indeed fails in that regard? If you don't understand, I doubt I can describe it. Tone: Watch the anime then read a little of the manga series Pokemon Adventures. It's not great, but you should get what I mean. Mechanics: The Pokemon, man. These people have no idea how anything in the game works. Evolution, moves, types, Pokemon themselves. It's gotten better, but especially early on, laughable. Structure: Play even Red and Blue again. The structure of how the Pokemon league actually works. The anime just makes up a lot of crap. You can see it especially towards the end of each league, anime vs game. Characters: When was I talking about early characters only? All I know is any character mildly interesting in game is overly simplified to a stupid degree in the anime, or altered completely to unrecognizable. Remember the ultra shy and nice Steel gym leader in Johto? How come in the anime she was another textbook tough and confident leader, with literally no hint of shyness whatsoever? Because that was easier to write. IE, laziness.

I'm still waiting on its 'vision' too.
