In Tales of Xillia: The final villain, King Gaius seeks peace and prosperity for his kindgom,
as any good ruler should. He sacrifices much, fighting on the front lines himself and over the course of the game losing his four closest companions in his quest to defend them from a foreign nation. However, Gaius goes so far as to kill not only soldiers and commanders, but also civilians,
ultimately deciding to leave the other group to decay and die in order to guarantee his people's safety. After learning the plight of the other nation your group decides to prevent King Gaius from simply leaving them to die, resulting in the final confrontation.
