What’s with the hate on dubs?
No matter what most of what I see online is “Dubs suck, smart people watch subbed anime.” I don’t get it, I personally like dubs. If only because if the show has a good bit of action I can focus on that and not reading subtitles.
Honestly, I don't get it either. My guess is that people prefer watching it in its lriginal form, and not a new version with new voices.
I suppose it's a rivalry born out of different preferences. I'm fine with dubs if they're true to the original meaning tbh, or are works of art like Ghost Stories.
I mean personally I don't watch dubs because most of the acting is, to be blunt, pretty terrible. There are certainly outliers, but the majority of dubs don't have the best acting. For example, Ash's current VA is seriously the only reason I despise the current english dub for the Pokemon anime. Some of the voice acting has been on point, but Ash's voice is so fucking grating that I just can't watch it dubbed. I also just personally like how Japanese sounds as a language, and I've never had issues reading the subtitles and paying attention to the animation.

I dislike dubs due to the recycled voice actors who can't even sound slightly different. I will watch certain older animes dubbed because I grew up on them. Also their voice acting more than half the time is extremely bad and I can't stand it.
Fact:A majority of this may have started with 4kids in my case for example The Anime for Yugioh But I never truly touched the subject of Dubbed Voice Acting itself....So I know little of what to say but I know I watched the dub of full metal alchemist brotherhood DUBBED and I liked it.
dubs are odd, sometimes they have terrible voice acting, and sometimes they are honestly beeter than subbed (looking at you dragon ball, using the same VAs since its inception. goku is like a godly muscleman at this point and for some reason his balls havent dropped yet)
99.9% of the time, things are best in their original language. That includes English things in English. For anime, however, English dubs very very rarely ever live up to the original in giving the characters the perfect voice, tone, acting, etc. And the worst dubs (YYH or anything 4Kids) flat out change scripts, where it doesn't make sense anymore, and what's worse is, most people you know only end up watching that butchered version. It's the worst when you like the original show and all people talk about is the horrendous dub. I used to defend dubs, until I began actually watching subs. How wrong I was. Also, I feel most people only prefer dubs because simply reading subs is too much of a chore. Sad, really.

I think I prefer sub not because the voices are significantly better or anything, but because that comes out earlier than the dub.

I agree, I mean mostly I used to watch dubs because I thought that putting it into Japanese subs is dumb. But then I legit tried to watch a sub and I realized how much I was wrong. I mean, people have their own prefrences, so let it be that way. Also the saying, "Sub is better than dub" is mostly true, though for some other certain anime I'm looking at you Soul Eater, the dub can be some what better than the sub. But that's my way of looking at it.
I, for one, blame 4kids.
tfw i actually enjoy 4kids dubs and censors they're so bad it's good.
I'm honestly mixed about this debate. While I do agree some dubs are god awful (4kids is definitely a prime example) some dubs actually hit their mark, however it feels like it isn't great nowadays. Dubs from 90's anime were actually pretty bad, not in the sense that scripts were changed, but the voice actors felt like they rarely put any emotion into their voice. In my honest opinion, Cowboy Bebop was one of the only few 90's dubs that was excellent. If we're gonna look at some of the blockbuster anime from the 90's, such as Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, the dubs for those shows were pretty bad. In fact, I despised Sailor Moon's original dub. Of course, as the years progressed, dubs started to get better, with solid performances in anime such as FullMetal Alchemist, Code Geass, Ghost in the Shell, the list can go on. As of 2016-2017 the only new dubs I can tolerate were Your Lie in April (which hit me really hard) and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (yes I'm a JoJo fan, but I can point out stuff that subs did way better in dub and vice versa) and it genuinely feels like most dubs are pretty weak (don't get me started with Attack on Titan) To kinda sum up, while dubs weren't perfect, most of them are manageable, but it does feel like dub quality is taking a turn for the worse, as most dubbed characters feel like their English voice doesn't really match up with the character, or just sound downright awful. Hopefully things will improve, but really that's all for time to tell.
Dubs are hated because of two reasons: -People who saw a bad dub once get used to bad dubs and only start watching subs (That, or they're used to 4Kids effing up everything) -ANIMU IS JAPAN SO I CANRT WUTCH WITH ENGALSH/[insert name of country] DUB I've only watched two anime in the English dub, and they're G Gundam and Shaman King. One because I heard it was hype (and it is), the other because... The sub isn't available in correct English.
4Kids, bad 90s dubbing, and a bunch of assholes who don't understand the concept of personal preferences. It's really the same for both sides. I constantly see morons ignantly throw around the word "weeb" when anyone says they prefer subs. While I don't mind subs (outside of Pokemon, Digimon, and Dragon Ball where dub is absolutely required) I do prefer dubs. And no, it's not because of subtitles; I just don't give much of a crap for Japanese VAs. The only shows where I actually kinda like or prefer subs are the Yugioh anime because I've watching it that way since 2/3 into 5Ds, so I've grown used to it; and Kill La Kill where I'd actually rank both versions pretty much equally. People like to spout off a million and one reasons why people should watch subbed, but at the end of the day, I watch/play this stuff for my enjoyment, not anyone else's. And I enjoy English voices.
