Phansite Game of the Year Thread 2017
So the year's just about over with and everything worth two *censored*s is already out, so I figured now's as good a time as any to make this. So let's get on with it. What are your top 5, 10, 15, 20, what the bleep ever games of this year? What are your worst?
Persona 5, Tales of Berseria, and Doki Doki Literature Club (didn't play too many new games this year + I lack a Switch :( ).
Top 2017 Games: -Persona 5 -Tales of Berseria Top Older Games -Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero Worst: -Fate Extella Most Disappointing: -LoZ: Breath of the Wild (fine enough. on its own, but disappointing as a Zelda game) -Digimon World Next Order ...Yeah I didn't really play much this year.
Telefang...
Most Disappointing: -LoZ: Breath of the Wild Yeah, no.
(edited by TogoSystem)
What an insightful rebuttal there. Most Disappointing: -Digimon World Next Order I wish I didn't have to agree with you on this one. It was fun, but it lacked that little bit extra. I'm not sure what I truly wanted out of it, but I was woefully underwhelmed.
Non-existent story, garbage dungeons, weapon durability. Yeah.
Breath of the Wild was pretty bad in my opinion, honestly. Not sure what I'd call my Game of the Year, I rarely play games in the year they're released. This wasn't much of an exception. I would say Persona 5, but that's a 2016 release, so it feels cheating to count it.
What an insightful rebuttal there. The instigator as always, I see. Next time I want your opinion, I'll ask for it. Shrines were so much more enjoyable because of how short they were. I always found dungeons in Zelda a bit tedious, and the format, but this open world was such a fresh concept. I think it's more expansive and interesting than a GTA game. I've had hours of fun just walking around and doing things at my own pace. They really freshened the Zelda format, yet keeping the same feel. No story? Pfft. How much did you actually play? Weapon durability forces you to adopt new strategies and adapt on the fly. And you will always find more or improved weapons. I think it excels at combat the most. Once you know what you're doing, weapons last longer too.
togo, do you actually have brain damage
Games of the year huh, sure. I'll give it a shot. -Gravity Rush 2 -NieR: Automata -Persona 5 If you don't live in Japan it was a 2017 release so I'm counting it If I had to say which game was the best objectively I'd say NieR. But P5 has had the biggest impact on my life of any game since, Earthbound back when I first played that. So, P5 has to take it for me.
togo, do you actually have brain damage Hilarious. Have to insult me with your alt instead. What was the point of this topic anyway? Like it's not obvious everyone HERE will pick P5.

I didn’t play BoTW, so I don’t really have an opinion on it? But it’s all just opinions here, I don’t think any retarded arguments have to happen today
Anyways, I really enjoyed Persona 5 (kinda obviously) and Fire Emblem Echoes. I don’t have a switch so I can’t say much for that many of the games being talked about.
The instigator as always, I see. Next time I want your opinion, I'll ask for it. Are you the pot or the kettle? You effectively waltzed in and told someone their opinion was wrong. You know that completely subjective thing that is always different from person to person? I was merely admiring your ability to completely ignore such base concepts as opinions. But please do call on me. My opinions are quite a treat.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
That aside, I too don't often play video games as they're released. Or at all really. Being busy with work and nothing else is truly the antithesis of this fabled "youth" I've heard so much about. But let's see: -Persona 5, it was a journey. It had ups and downs but it was great! -NieR: Automata, haven't finished it due to time constraints but it's very fluid and the story is enthralling. -Super Mario Odyssey, again it has issues but it set my heart aflutter with childlike wonder while I played.
I think it's no surprise that I'm voting on Persona 5, but Nier Automata and What Remains of Edith Finch both did pretty good I feel. I don't think I like either more that P5 but they certainly would've taken the cake otherwise.
Hilarious. Have to insult me with your alt instead. Actually, this is my main account now, I'm probably not going to use Teddie-Anon anymore.

I disagreed, I didn't try to provoke him like you did to me, Mr. instigator. Funny, you seem to be the one with issues of opinion, as this is the second time you've called me out simply for having a different opinion than everyone else. Seriously, the first time being over simple drinks. You've really got issues. But I do wonder who the hypocrite really is. Hmm.

Wait, What Remains of Edith Finch was this year? Okay, then that's my GotY, since I'm still counting Persona 5 as a 2016 release. Togo, no one called you out for having a different opinion. He just sarcastically poked you a bit for just saying "Yeah, no." without actually giving any context.

Top 2017 : I would count FFXV because I got it this year, but it came out last so -Persona 5 -Danganronpa V3 -Sonic Mania -Tales of Berseria -Nier Automata Honorable Mention: Tekken 7 -Fire Emblem Echeos -Doki Doki literature club Worst: -Sonic Forces (just why Sega) Can't say I played or looked at other things that were That bad. Forces is also only here because I want Sega to learn from their more sucessful or fun Sonic games. We want to prevent another Boom or 06. Forces is only meh.

I want to play DDLC by the end of this year, but I’m a little disappointed I got spoiled on the story. But I’m sure it’ll be fun regardless!
Danganronpa v3 only came out THIS year?
Danganronpa v3 only came out THIS year?I think so?
Not that I'm super well versed on the series, but I thought all of them were years old by this point. Didn't know they were still going.
(edited by TogoSystem)
DD Remake fuck off that game deserves it inb4 skyrim rerelease gets nominated
Danganronpa v3 only came out THIS year? It came out localized in September, only Japan had it eatier.
In no particular order, my top five would have to be: - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Persona 5 - Nier: Automata - Super Mario Odyssey - Horizon Zero Dawn But if I had to pick a #1 spot, it would probably go to Zelda.
sonic 06 jk I hope DLCs count, Horizon: Zero Dawn Frozen Wilds was a great expansion that came out this year. HZD:FW is my second best game this year, Danganronpa v3 is third place. Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is my top spot because it's another Dishonored game with game play and level design that have never disappointed.

the best games of 2017 has gotta be: cuphead, mario oddesye, injustice 2, mario kart 8 deluxe, and a lot of other ones
[quote] Shrines were so much more enjoyable because of how short they were. I always found dungeons in Zelda a bit tedious, and the format, but this open world was such a fresh concept. Shrines are one of the things I actually liked, but they still don't make up for the lack of traditional dungeons. Divine Beasts sucked and everything about them was repetitive, even the build up to getting to one. [quote]I think it's more expansive and interesting than a GTA game. I've had hours of fun just walking around and doing things at my own pace. Once I got the map filled out, I stopped caring. I'd seen just about everything there was to see, so the magic was gone, and I got bored of walking around aimlessly. At least with GTAV, I can go shoot people up (including the police), bang hookers, or go on a variety of missions. [quote]They really freshened the Zelda format, yet keeping the same feel. While I didn't care too much for the game itself (not bad, but not my favorite), I honestly think Link Between Worlds did it better. It was open, but still had at least some structure and good dungeons as well as items. [quote]No story? Pfft. How much did you actually play? I beat the whole damn thing. Zora's domain and Zelda's dairies were great, but that was basically it as far as interesting story goes. Everything else was just Ganon destroyed the world a long time ago. And people keep going on about how the story is "in the world" or whatever, but the world is telling me the exact same thing as everyone else. Ganon destroyed the world a long time ago. It doesn't help that he's basically been flying around Hyrule Castle for 100 years and pretty much no one seems to actually be making a big deal about him possibly breaking free soon. Weapon durability forces you to adopt new strategies and adapt on the fly. And you will always find more or improved weapons. I think it excels at combat the most. Once you know what you're doing, weapons last longer too.In a game that's supposed to be all about freedom, why should I be "forced" to do anything? Besides, strategy really doesn't change that much. Just keep hitting them until they die. Except now you have to constantly take the time out to switch weapons, and if you run out, your only option is to retreat. There's also the problem of the fact that the vast majority of weapons that drop from enemies are straight booty. Oh and I like getting attached to certain weapons/items. Like the BeyBlade or Ball & Chain from Twilight Princess. You can't do that here. Even with the weapons you get from the champions. And the trouble you have to go through just to get them back is honestly not even worth it. ____________________________________________________________________________________ I'd also like to add Neir Automata as an honorable mention. Didn't play enough of it to make my actual game of the year list, but what I did play, I enjoyed the hell out of.
I'm actually finally gonna beat BotW on Friday. But that game hands down has to be my Game of the Year. Sorry P5. sorry Mario. Say what you will about the lack of story, what we did get was honestly great in my book. Especially once The Champions Ballad came out.
oh yeah, also for honor is amazing

Didn't play enough of it to make my actual game of the year list, but what I did play, I enjoyed the hell out of. I can barely make out what you wrote from all those mismatched quotes. Try fighting a Lynel with that strategy of "Keep hitting until they die"; you won't last long. Or even a mobile Guardian. And yeah, I have weapon preferences too, that's why you keep the rare and powerful ones either at your house or use them only when you need to, and use the most disposable ones in general gameplay. And even if you lose said cherished weapons, enemies and weapons respawn with each Blood Moon (or just as Stalfos, holding said weapons) so you can always find them again. It's good to pin a location on the map where enemies that use the weapons you like spawn. You can always go back and get more. 90% of the game is doing other things but the story. Just exploring the whole world is probably longer than the story itself. I'm curious how much you actually played. Because I'm thinking it wasn't very far.

Once you actually learn how to dodge or even just get the champion powers, you very much can just hit em' dead. It just takes a lot longer. -having to go and save weapons just seems stupid to me. What am I supposed to do? Go all the way back to the house every time I get something decent? And what if I come across a Guardian or Lynel and all I have is some garbage skeleton arm? -Half the reason I play console Zelda is for the story, and as I said before, the world stops being interesting the first time you see everything. And while I don't remember the exact time, I do remember it was at least around 60 hours.
Really I'd say the biggest issue with BotW are the 'dungeons'. I mostly like this series for the dungeons, because they often are good at worst. BotW is frankly... bad though. The shrines are plentiful but weak, commonly containing either nothing, the same enemy as always, or a puzzle that can be completed without thought. The actual dungeons are a step closer to what the series does well, but only a step. They are so simple it's not much better than the Shrines. Open world is a good idea in concept but since you can enter anything in any order, it means there really is no progression, they cannot teach you mechanics and build upon that and test you on it. The closest they get is some shrines where they introduce a concept and expand on it once, maybe twice before you're finished. It's a real shame. I could go on and write an essay on the faults I think BotW has, but I'll just add this as my major problem with the game. BotW to me is an experiment that made bank, but was ultimately unsuccessful in my eyes as an improvement to the franchise. I think Zelda does best with a semi-linear structure and Metroidvania lite elements, but BotW replaces a lot of that with thoughtless activities that I hesitate to call puzzles.
I only keep the super weapons I have no plans on using until I need them at the house. But... There are warp points everywhere. You can go back super easily even if you needed to. To me, the annoying bits are countered with new features. The blood moon counters weapon durability, etc. It's all pretty balanced for me. I've just been exploring. I only have the gale power, which helps with that. Everything else, combat wise, I've done the hard way. Which has made me into a better player, so I like that.
(edited by TogoSystem)
To be fair too, it's only interesting the first time isn't exclusive to this Zelda, or Zelda in general. I think the game that suffers most in the franchise is that regard is Majora's Mask. Once you know it, you're Bill Murray in Groundhog Day #1000000994. You can beat it with your eyes closed.
My favorite games I've played this year would have to be: Persona 5, LoZ BotW, Mario Odyssey, Sonic Mania, Hollow Knight, and A Hat In Time. Now with those games out of the way, The BEST games I've played this year are: KNACK 2 BABY! Super Mario Bros 2! Shrek 2: The Videogame! The Simpsons Kill Flanders 2! Wacky Races Crash & Dash! The Game of Life! Naruto Online! I don't care when these games came out they are timeless, they deserve spots in every GOTY list!
The instigator as always, I see. Next time I want your opinion, I'll ask for it. Wow, sharing opinions in THIS topic! What an idea. Oh, so people can't post their opinion, but you can.

To get things back on track here. I didn't play many new games this year. Don't have a switch or Wii U so can't say BOTW The best I played this year would have to be Persona 5. There's a lot of things that I like in it... also a few things that I dislike... like some of the trophies. Still it's hands down the best game for me this year. The only other games I've played were KH2.8, KH1.5+2.5, and Destiny 2 KH2.8 is really just a collection like 1.5+2.5 While it does have new content, it's not enough to call it a new game. 1.5+2.5 is the same deal Destiny 2 was.... ok at best. It's not amazing... but at least I can have a good time playing I guess. So yeah...... P5 won.
