As a firm supporter of angst of all kinds, I find merciful characters more enjoyable. While bloodthirsty ones can just kill any enemy, or murder their way out of potential situations - The merciful ones are more at risk. They have to use more peaceful means, and only kill as a last resort. And often, if they are made to have to kill, it haunts them for the rest of their life. Fills them with immense regret as they sit there every single night and question what they could have done differently.
