Joker Reviews: Daemon X Machina: Prototype Missions (Demo)
So right off the bat this game appealed to my Armored Core nostalgia. Because of this, my bias kicked in, and I immediatly fell in love wiht the trailer. What's this, you say? A Joker Review where Joker isn't going to tear the game in 15 peices and punch it's mother? Why yes. Yes it is. The trailer for this game was a bit crazy. It shows fast combat, high flying shooting, and giant mechs. With the free demo ready to go. So, off I went. I opened this game, not trying to fully expect an Armored core experiance, and I hate myself for this, as it already set myself up for failure. I know this, you know this, the game creators know this, and the devious bastards knew exactly what they were doing. Loading the demo up, I'm greeting with a light overview of the world setting. It's light, it's stubtle, nothing over the top, and leaves just enough for you to have your curiosity peaked, but you are not playing this for the story. You can tell the game devs are fully aware of this, no, you are playing this for fast flying fully customizable mechs, and they don't disappoint. They go a step above, actually: The game starts with character creation. My inner Armor Core fanboy started screaming at this point. Granted, the options are completly lack luster, but the fact this was even here was a pleasent suprise, as I could kinda tweak my character to make it feel more like my avatar, so I proceed into the game. A light tutorial treated me to a simple overview: "Hanger for missions, lab for personal levelups, at the cost of money" Kay.
I immediatly jump into the hanger, and my heart nearly stopped. It felt like a 1 for 1 shot of armored core. From the UI, down to the "Memory Unit" (or Weight capacity for the AC people), now I'm ready. Paint job done, feeling good about this, I take off to the tutorial. I have the game talking to me, and the world starts to become more enjoyable as you get some smartass mercs talking to you about how they are here to keep you alive during your test. I manage to limp my way through it, getting use to the controls; Type A sucks for me. Holding Y to boost while using both joysticks and 3 of the four L/R buttons is not a simple task. Turns out Control Type C was better, as it literally just flips Rz and Y, giving me significantly better control for dodge/boost and fast paced explosions. Second mission in, I nuke the first thing I see, and I noticed a read ! on the screen. Right this catches my eye, my AI hollars at me that I get to salvage blown up mechs for parts. Jumping down, with a wide eye intregue of a child on christmas, i proceed to tear the unit apart, much like present wrapping, and I'm granted a menu of items. It's a choose one, leave the rest style, so the game is built around the idea of re-playing missions to score new parts. Farming. Which gets you bonus money. Kay.
3 missions down, and I finally lose to the final fight in the demo. I got overconfident in using an assault rifle and a shield. Going back to the previous mission, I end up getting new gear, over triple my HP, defense, and mobility, and I trade out my setup for an assault rife, bazooka, and missle launcher, which allows me to take down the tower sized foe that proceeded to tear me in half like an action figure given to a savage 3 year old. During my first list, the game kicked me out of my suit, and I was actually running around with my avatar. You are given a floating "gun" like turret and follows you and shoots where you want. This lead me to start experimenting a bit and heading back to the lab for augmentations. I will say that I am no at all fond of turning myself into a cyber turret of death, as each augment makes you more robot like, but the effects can't be denied: Computer lockon in human form, double jump, an attached lightsaber, etc etc. (They also give you the ability to rereoll your upgrades, as the system only lets you get one ability per tree) Upgrades also let you bypass your avatar augments, and lets you power your suit as well. It's a pick and choose your own talent tree, and I can see great promise in this, as the demo gives you 3 tier levels to play with. I gave this demo a solid 3 and a half hours of play time, and I honestly didn't even realize I did. This is a guaranteed day one purchase for me.
Never played Armored Core in the past so I kind of glossed over the trailer but after reading this I might give the demo a shot. Sounds like it might be something I'd enjoy.
all i got to do in the demo was the character creation, and then i got distracted but i enjoy fully customizable characters so even with having played any of it i already have good opinions
After having played the demo for everything it had to offer I think I agree with everything stated here. Great game with a lot to offer. I'll probably be picking it up at some point when it's released as well.
I just wanted to play it for the robots tbh I’m really looking forward to it though
