He was driven to the brink and was left broken. Once he got his power though, he understood that he could finally become someone people wanted. Albeit the wrong way, he started to achieve his goals to try and get revenge.
His actions were atrocious at best...but...I can't hate the guy. He suffered, and didn't have anyone to help him through it. Adding a sudden gain of an amazing power caused something to snap...so at the end of the day...I can't blame him 100%.
