Summon and something that bothers me about it
In persona one, the party called out to their Personas, in persona 4, the party called their persona via will inside the TV world
In persona 3, the party sort of....forced them out by evoking their power
In persona 5, it's the mask, and something that bothers me an the mask is that it can make established Personas take another form, essentially corrupting them. I know I might be looking into this way too hard but it bothers me.
Shadows are the degenerated, repressed self. When they become a Persona, it's essentially shaking off the muck and finally being a true reflection of the self.

That's how I see it, anyway.

3 was trauma, 4 was self acceptance, 5 is breaking the chains on your soul.
3's summoning is more of a "corruption" than 5, imo. Evokers basically rip the Persona right out of you, for better or worse. The stress it causes on the user is noted repeatedly.

The masks, on the other hand, are just a convenient form for a Persona to take when not actively in use. The whole process of extreme pain/bloody face ripping only happens once initially.

There have been plenty of benign form changes with Personas in the past, too, namely the handful of different modes that Rise's Persona takes on in the P4 spinoffs.

Pretty much all it means is that a Persona can take on different modes/forms if necessary to the wielder.
A persona takes on a form that reflects it's owner. " Persona Corruption" is the other side of the coin that " Persona Evolution" is on.
