the best way to get used to difficulty is to face it head on!! safe mode won't prepare you for harder difficulties in the future!!

Haha, did my first playthrough on hard mode. I would have done Merciless, but frankly I think it's too unfair.

merciless is hard but boring

just go on normal, I did and it wasn't hard, next playthrough, I'll go merciless on bosses.

Since this thread is alive anyway.
I did my NG+ playthrough on safe since I wanted to get some trophies.
On safe you can beat the reaper on one of your first few trips to mementos since it lets you fully revive for free. It takes a while though, so having a persona from your previous playthrough that can do good damage is a must.
Having level 80's going into the second palace is more entertaining than you'd think.
