You can increase your expertise in greet to get other methods of negotiation, mostly just gaining the ability to give them stuff to increase your chances.

Literally spam Greeting. That's it. Later you can learn to Bribe or Intimidate them but spamming Greeting is literally always your best bet.

You can only negotiate with enemies of joker's level or lower. Analysing them will reveal 1 of 4 personality types that reflects what kind of answers they prefer. The personality types are outlined in one of the tutorials. If you're fighting something dangerous (i.e. it might kill you if you screw up negotiations) and haven't saved in a while it's better to not take the risk. Try to keep a nice stock of life stones, lol.

I personally don't negotiate with them until I meet the Sun Confidant. Makes it easier to negotiate by a milestone.

What I would do it if I don't get those little musical notes on the first try, all out attack to just make sure it's safe. If you're up into the point of them game that members of your party have "Artist talk (Yusuke's), "Girl Talk" (Ann's), "Cat Talk" (Morgana's), ect. Then you can go for it because sometimes it'll allow for a retry with shadow negotiation.

At level 13, Zorro learns lucky punch. Use that if you want to down a demon without any weaknesses or if you don't know its weakness. I find that physical hit-all skills crit often.
