Well, I guess we'd have to see how Fire Emblem Warriors is gonna be handled to get an idea of how different characters from completely different time frames would get together...

Just do SMT Warriors instead...Larger Character Pool is a bit better imo. But that's just me.

You know what, honestly, they don't. Hyrule Warriors had essentially the same plot as a regular LoZ game, but with a lot more beat-'em-up.
