Joker Reviews: Phantom Breaker Battlegrounds Overdrive
A cheeky little game that has very poor humor, over cliché anime troups, and a redundant retro style to try and compliment it's own actions.

This game is interesting in what it provides, but it crams it down your throats like that guy with the photo of his kids: It's a side scroller with what feels like 30+ enemies on the screen at a time, and that's it.
You start the game buy selecting a handful of girls all armed to the teeth and hardly pased middle school, to enter into a retro styled (which is very well done for pixel art, mind you) city scape where you get sucked into some sort of situation because you are trying to save someone.

To be frank, I've completed this game twice, and I still have no idea what the story is. It bored me that much.
Throw away story aside, you go through each stage, slashing the hell out of anything in your way. It's a fun little actiony thing where you get Weak, Medium, and Heavy. Spamming Weak auto combos into medium to heavy, and medium goes into Heavy, following by just Heavy being a very poor choice in life if you feel the need to try and use this if you attempt to hit anything without comboing into Heavy first.

As you proceed to enjoy your combos, you can also compliment it int oa slew of attacks: You have 3 flavors of “Special” attacks, where you hold X, with a combination of down, forward, and/or double tap forward, where you can blast things for a free to use kill all. There is also a breaker attack where pressing R1 will cast magic missle to the degrees that any D
So as you progress through the stage, I would like to try and comment on the music, but unfortuentnly, it's forgettable to such a strong degree, that I was immediately distracting by the loud “CLING” sound that is made when you pick up the coins that explode out of each enemy like it's an episode of Scott Pilgrim. I don't know why all enemies in the world are coin filled pinatas of tsunami stormy explosions, but it's all well and neat when you see such looming baubles that interweave into the mess like the reg gems. Reg Gems happen to be your actual experience points. Collect them to level up.

When you level up, the game sends you to a screen after each stage complete (or death in other modes) where you can use your skill points to level up the ability tree, or your direct stats. Each time you level a stat or skill, that select stat or skill branch gets more expensive to level up.

This game sports multiple modes, as well as up to 4 players to try and kindle the madness into an elaborate experience. I can see how this monotonous action of fast paced beat 'em up would be a fun party game in short spurts, but I had noone available to test the couch co-op, and Hazama was my poor bastard that volunteered for the slide show that consisted of Online Co-Op.
Granted, the slideshow was not as bad as say... dialup on a PC that is 3x under spected for a game, but it was annoying regardless.

Overall, if you are really bored, and have $15USD to burn, it's not terrible. But it's better spent on other things.
Like paying someone to bash your head in with a brick.
Do you think you can review the Caligula Effect? I've been pondering on getting it for my vita but I still haven't bought it... that's if you've played it of course.
I'm better than you so i should do the review
@goroami - I'll put it on my radar. It loots quite unique.

@Brown_Brocks - You and your 4 alts do not humor me.

Thank you very much! I've seen some reviews on the internet but someone like you looks a lot more trust worthy with spending my money. Anyways if you do post a review on it I'll look forward to it!
Interesting, in-depth review! From what I've seen, the game appears to be Scott Pilgrim-esque, although it seems a bit repetitive, as you pointed out. This was a fun read~
I should try this game out sometime
