Charlie Gard incident
Charlie Gard is an infant that suffers from a rare genetic condition called mitochondrial depletion syndrome. Charlie cannot move, eat, drink or even breath on his own. His parents have tried to seek out medical treatment for their child but they were denied by Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). The hospital denies the family of being allowed to seek treatment outside of the UK claiming that Charlie will continue to suffer. After going to court, the Gard family can no longer seek treatment outside of their country and are not allowed to care for their child at home. What are your guys's opinion on this case?
Not only that hospital, but other doctors have also confirmed that treatment, although not necessarily 0% chance, is unlikely to work. However, it's a tough situation. The hospital and courts are not trying to make the child die nor are they trying to keep him away from the family. They just want to protect Charlie as they believe he will suffer throughout the treatment and eventually die in pain. I can see both sides of this, especially since the family loves their son and wants to keep him alive. But does he deserve to suffer and then die anyway? I think they should let him die in peace as the hospital wants to do.
