A Character's Manner
Now, I know this probably sounds a bit similar to my previous thread, but well, I feel there is still quite a bit more into what makes a character, plus its not like the last one got much attention, if anyone wishes to talk about more general parts of a character, the link is here
https://phansite.net/forum/topic.php?topic=8815

Now, onto the matter at hand. Here, I aim to see what people like and dislike about how a character acts. Or rather, what makes a character, and often by extension a story, interesting or boring to read.

What, in my opinion, makes a character interesting to read about is not just what they say, its what and how they do it that reveals more about them. Unfortunately this is often handled by revealing their thoughts, but that makes any character revelations feel... Clunkier, as though it is forced. One should be able to get a decent idea of who a character is without reading their minds, as that is far more realistic.

On the other hand, they become far less interesting to learn about if everything they think is said, rather than done, or if they simply become a machine through which events occur. They feel empty.

Again, I would like everyone's opinions and for this to become a serious discussion, but considering how well it went last time, I'm not optimistic.
This it's pretty good to know
Or, instead of mind reading you can have lengthy exposition. That way, you can know even speedwagon is afraid, without reading his mind.

There's much much infodumping done in Jojo's and yet, none of the characters feel clunky or fall flat. Bites za dusto has activated: your opinion is invalid.
IS THAT A MF JOJO REFERENCE
maybe ?

but in all seriousness, this debate is the same as the previous one. A good character is a character you can resonate with. If you like him, the way he's brought forward won't matter. In the end, you'll grow to like him.
I mean it seems there's a double standard. If we stop adding extra details, you'll be back complaining about one liner posts.
Yea, Gamma, not to start a fight, but you're basically implying that we all handle our characters "wrong". Who gives you the right to judge? Keep these thoughts to yourself, honestly....
The issue is not at all adding details, in fact, in my opinion that's the solution. However, there is a point where it becomes too much information. As a general rule, I like to write to where anything that can be seen or heard is stated, and no further.

I would like for this to not degenerate into a flamewar, but well, there's not really much control I have over that
Well I'm sorry if we don't write as "great" as you do.....
In my opinion, what makes a character is how they react to the things going on around them. That's why you'll see that my characters rarely initiate actions, preferring to let things go and react as best they can.
wait this wasn't a general thing ? I thought this was about any and all characters. not the phansite.
Joker, please leave for a while and come back when you aren't feeling as insulted. Little will be done if you do not wish to look at it seriously, right now you're taking it primarily as a personal attack, and that is not the intent
It is supposed to be Liam, though it has admittedly been brought up in relation to events on the Phansite, so I'm not really surprised at what happened.
I'm not saying it's personal, and I'm not going to leave. You RE avoiding what I'm saying entirely because you know it's true. Just because you think you have good writing skills doesn't mean you can gloat. And another thing. Tell NotIgor to do his own damn talking
@FemJokerboi
Im not sure you understood, what gamma is trying to do is say that while character is important, there's timing and pacing. Im sorry if you misunderstood.
Im sure it hurts you to hear that you may not write well, but you do, he's just saying that a character requires pacing, and that's a general thing, not completely you.
In the future, try to analyze and regulate your feelings before becoming angry, can we do that?
I dont understand the problem at the moment, are you complaining about the quality of content?
The reason your getting hostility is Because Of the timing of your post, most people are still pissed about NotIgor harassing star last night.
Not that I care, but he can boast if he wants to. this is a free world and you have no right what-so-ever to tell him what he may or may not do. Not to mention, this is the effing internet. What did you expect dood?
This isn't a topic for complaining, this is a topic for sharing thoughts. Personal attacks are entirely unhelpful. I understand if you have a personal issue with me and, if you are calm about it, would be happy to discuss it over PM, however, any personal grief does not need to be taken out here.
I'm dumbfounded you all believe this.....
It's about the site. NotIgor is involved so guess who this is targeting.
@Liam
Bud, calm. Anger won't help anything from either side.
I will admit, perhaps the timing was not the best, however, I planned this from my previous thread, and had been doing a series on the matter. Events around it are unfortunate, but they are not my doing.
I ain't angry boss, just showin' the obvious.
anyway, I wanted a debate. Please debate the previous opinions that are actually pertaining to the thread. I'm in severe need of debate.
Either way, I put my discussion of the topic on, though I'm curious as to these "events" you've mentioned, mind being more specific?
The Star incident of yesterday is primarily what I mean. As has been mentioned, many people are still upset about it, and thus more likely to take offense, which of course helps no one.
So this is you siding with spammed who forced her off her own thread?
Can I get a recap of the recent events ? I need a recap episode.
Taking sides helps no one. I was trying to have some sort of discussion, and I am sorry that it seems that way after yesterday. Perhaps it would be good to lock this thread for a few hours and bump it when people have calmed down?
I don't care either way. If there's a fun debate to be had, I'll debate. If it's not fun, i'll still debate.
Allow me to clarify, I meant the events from this post.

"It is supposed to be Liam, though it has admittedly been brought up in relation to events on the Phansite, so I'm not really surprised at what happened."
I thought that is what you were referring to. The Star incident in which some people expressed their displeasure in a less-than-mature fashion resulted in a flame war. I hope to give people the chance to express their opinions in a more calm and collected way than... That chaos, but I understand people still being upset over it, hence the mentions that I am not surprised at what transpired.
You're a sorry excuse of a human being, secretly making fun of others, and then backpedaling when confronted. And no one is the wiser....... except me apparently....
As previously mentioned Joker, I would be happy to resolve any personal issues you may have with me one to one. However, this is not the proper place to air them. I have had a similar issue with Yuki, you know I'm on Discord. If you have a personal issue, take it up with me.
Ah. I see. Then you understand that placing a thread about discussing "interesting" characters soon after a thread where a character was attacked for being "a bad character" could come off as hostile?
Yes, I do see why it could be considered such Akamoto, which is why I am not at all surprised this happened. I had something like this planned for a while, and the timing is most unfortunate. I will admit the timing was likely poor, this is hardly the first time it has happened, and if necessary I will request the topic be deleted and wait for a longer period before reposting it.
I mean the timing is suspicious because Yu even warned us a post from NotIgor was coming to say something that'd start a fight and that you'd moderate.
Not Yu, sorry it was all you.
I'm the book "One of us is lying" each character starts off as a stereotype and evolves into their own person by the end of the story. That's what I like to see characters do.
I can see it being misinterpreted that way Mig, though that is far from my intent. I ended up getting them to at least wait for a better time and try some more civil discussion, though of course, it did not end up being seen as such, and that is understandable.

Thank you for actually posting on-topic Hibki. I kinda resigned myself to total derailment by now.
Also you being a paragon of writing us a joke.

All you do ic is attack others and side with villains.
I never once claimed to be some paragon of writing, or even decent. And I am sorry if it came off that way.
I would like to improve, that is one of the reasons I am here, to improve by writing with and around others.
I think it's a good way to do things, one I've tried to do, though don't know how well it succeeds. Explaining why someone does something I think is more fitting for a book. In terms of roleplay I'd like to see less of thoughts and things having to be explained, but have them come across via habits, or how they perform certain actions, and see how others interpret them.
A lame example, but an example nonetheless would be that one moment way back in Leblanc when Hibiki just stared at her phone screen for a bit, it wasn't much, but I wanted her thoughts to get by more from her staring at the contact list than stating her emotions and thoughts.
You did. You claimed to be an example of adequate writing and felt it wasn't working.

You can't backoedal even with your friends helping.
As a writer, this topic is critcal. You cannot have a story story without different layers of character depth. Its a type of theming that allows a person to understand the character, and get an idea of who they are.
There has been plenty of times when Ive seen a writer do somethingg and though "Thats not something the hero would do. Wtf"
Thats the type of theming that is important to character development and growth.

As an RPer, giving the charactet its own identity is difficult when you are in the middle of the moment. Your own personality will often seep through, and the walls of real or fantasy tend to blend. It can be dizzying if you are not careful, or irritating if the other people involved juat do basic things like *Enters* *Sits* *belches*.
Basic things that do not inspire the mind to turn the gears and invoke imagination.
Part of the fun with beig detailed with the character depth you can evoke is half the fun. You can stur emotion, or get someones adrenaline pumping, or have them pining for more.

But as a Moderator, Im VERY disappointed with how childish this conversation went.
If you are mad butthurt over something stupid or you feel this thread is "an attack", Id STRONGLY recommend some self relfectiom as your subconscious just might be telling you to get better.

Otherwise, please have a coversation, not a flame war.
I dont want to ban people.
*note post was done on a phone

Ignore the spelling.
That's nice, Joker. But here's the thing, you say to do that stuff and I think "I only know what I do."

Rantish threads like this will always devolve into attacks, especially with bad wording and bad timing. And because they don't solve anything. This doesn't teach what to do, just whines about what not to.
While I cannot find the post you are referring to, I believe I said I HOPE or would like to think that I am decent, not that I am. I do not aim to sound presumptuous. Again, if you have an issue with me personally, I would like you to take it up with me, personally. Yuki has done such before, and I would like to think it helped us understand each other better.
This isn't a rantish thread, this isn't meant to teach you what to do, or whine about what not to do. This was meant to be a discussion, once upon a time.
But what did you two hope to achieve? Just talk in circles?

Imo if you aren't trying to solve the problem, pointing it out is just whining.
Hibiki is exactly right here.

I strongly recommend people to go take a break and uncoil your wrath on something producive. If you have a personal vendetta, take it to PMs

This will be my final notice on derailing this conversion with undue rage.
Can't really add anything that Joker hasn't, but I will say that I agree with him.

Calm down, and keep it civil, or stop talking. Final warning kids.
All I can do is ask people to think about something. I cannot force anyone to take it seriously, I cannot force anyone to change. Joker can technically silence people, but he most certainly SHOULD not. A discussion only works if people can talk rationally.
It was a common tradition among indian tribes to end any meetings as soon as someone got angry, then reconvene the next day. Sometimes issues took weeks to resolve, but they believed it helped make their decision the correct one.
Pop quiz:
What type of character did I show with my posts in this thead?
Oh no, I didn't study
